For me, sounds are like colors: words are reddish or green, bluish or brown. I feel in colours, and for a long time I‘ve been translating these impressions into “word-pictures” according to a colour-alphabet of my own devising, in which each letter is represented by its own hue.
When I came to the USA on January 1, 2007, I was impressed most of all by its landscape, its width and size, its colours and its moods. On trips along the coast, through deserts and over mountains, I made notes of my impressions and painted them later in my studio using my colour-alphabet. The result is the series called “America”. The series comprises of strict geometrical colour-combinations, which I send away like postcards into the world. Whoever knows the key can read the cards. For everyone else, they are a combination of words and colours that can take on a life of their own in the minds of the viewer.
